LAURIE WATSON

Laurie Watson is the director of Awakenings Counseling for Couples and Sexuality that has offices in Greensboro and Raleigh with 8 clinicians. She’s an AASECT certified sex therapist and licensed marriage family counselor and is currently finishing her doctorate in sexology with research in helping couples recover sexually from breast cancer.

As an author, she’s written a book titled Wanting Sex Again - How to Rediscover and Heal a Sexless Marriage (published in 2012 by Berkley Imprints) and she’s a blogger for Psychology Today and WebMD with over 6 million reads.  As an educator, Laurie addresses physicians and psychological training programs around the state and is a frequent guest lecturer at the medical schools of Duke and UNC Chapel Hill.  

Her latest endeavor is a co-host with Dr. Adam Mathews in their sex podcast FOREPLAY - Radio Sex Therapy available on iTunes and Stitcher with specific episodes dedicated to the many topics of specific sexual dysfunction and relational problems.

Dr. Adam Mathews is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor and owner of Mathews Counseling. He has over 15 years of experience working with couples and families from a wide diversity of backgrounds. He teaches on marriage and family as an adjunct professor for both NorthCentral University and Pfeiffer University as well as through numerous speaking engagements.

He is co-host of the popular podcast Foreplay Radio Sex Therapy and the president of the North Carolina Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. He is also an American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists Clinical Fellow and Supervisor.

He and his wife, Rebekka, are celebrating 14 years of marriage and enjoy spending time with their three children, Lily, Reya, and Brennan.

Carole Cullen, LMFT

Carole Cullen is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, AAMFT Approved Supervisor, Certified Gottman Therapist and Workshop Leader in Wake Forest, North Carolina. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from SUNY Stony Brook and her Master’s Degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from Hofstra University.

After the tragedy of 9/11, Carole was specially trained in working with grief, complex trauma and high conflict relationships. Having worked with first responders and families that had lost a loved one, she understands the complex dynamics of families in crisis, conflict management, communication issues, and rebuilding trust.

My-Therapist, Inc., a private practice specializing in working with couples to create more meaningful and intimate relationships was started in 2001.  Carole customizes her therapeutic services to meet the needs of couples in crisis through a variety of services including private couples therapy, intensive marital therapy ranging from one to three days, and couples retreats and workshops. Couples Workshops NC, of which Carole is the co-founder, presents couple workshops and retreats including;  The Art and Science of Love, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work and Love & Sex 360.

Having deep passion for couple and family wellness, Carole often speaks at trainings and events.  She has been a recurring guest on G105 as a Relationship Expert as well as the StayHappilyMarried.com podcast. 

Carole and her husband Chris have been married 15 years and love watching their 2 children, Matthew and Sophia playing hockey and riding horses.

Shelly Hummel, LMFT

Shelly Hummel is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Gottman Therapist and Workshop Leader in Wake Forest, North Carolina. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology with Honors from The University of Iowa and her Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northern Illinois University.

Shelly specializes in couple therapy and has been in practice for 19 years. She is the founder of The Align Center for Couples and Align Counseling in Wake Forest, NC where she sees couples for weekly therapy and couples intensives, which are 1-3 days of couples therapy for couples in crisis or for out-of-state clients. She is also the co-founder of Couples Workshops of North Carolina – an organization that teaches The Art and Science of Love – a Gottman Method two-day workshop for couples who wish to strengthen their relationship and for therapists who wish to experience Gottman Method Couples Therapy – a research-based therapy designed by The Gottman Institute in Seattle, Washington where Shelly frequently travels to assist as a roving therapist to support workshop participants. She has been a guest blogger for The Gottman Institute’s “#AskGottman” series and guest speaker for the NCAMFT Capital Chapter.

Shelly has previously been employed by The University of North Carolina Department of Psychiatry and Mercy Mayo Clinic of Des Moines, Iowa where she facilitated a mandated state program for divorcing parents entitled “Children in The Middle.” She regularly speaks at Hope Lutheran Church and guides the “Principles for Making Marriage Work” for which she is a certified educator. She also provides consultation to therapists on a weekly or case-by-case basis.
